What to Do Immediately After a Traffic Stop
Getting pulled over is stressful even when you have done nothing seriously wrong. The 60 seconds when an officer first walks up to your window set the tone for the entire interaction — and the 48 hours after you receive a citation determine how much it costs you.
The first 60 seconds
- Pull over to the right shoulder as soon as it is safe. Use your turn signal so the officer knows you saw them.
- Turn off the engine, lower the driver's window, and turn on the interior light if it is dark.
- Place both hands on the steering wheel in plain sight. Don't reach for your wallet or glove box until asked.
- Wait for the officer to speak first. Greet them politely. Hand over license, registration, and insurance when requested.
What to say (and not say)
You are required to identify yourself and provide your documents. You are not required to answer "do you know why I stopped you?" A simple "I'd rather not guess, officer" is respectful and protects you. Never admit to speeding, running a sign, or any other violation — that statement will appear on the officer's report and can be used in court.
If you get a ticket
Take the citation, sign it (signing is not an admission of guilt — it is a promise to appear), and drive away calmly. Then, within 48 hours:
- Read the citation carefully. Note the violation code, fine amount, court date, and county.
- Check your eligibility for traffic school. Most states let you dismiss one ticket per year through an approved course. Browse state-approved courses.
- Decide: pay, fight, or attend traffic school. Paying is an admission of guilt and usually adds points to your record.
- Call your insurance later, not sooner. If the ticket is dismissed through traffic school, your insurer never has to know.
