Why drivers enroll

One reason. One goal.

The 5-hour Pre-Licensing Course is the milestone that unlocks your New York road test — and eventually your first driver's license.

Schedule your New York road test

Anyone 18 or older with a New York learner's permit must complete the 5-hour Pre-Licensing Course before the DMV will let them schedule the behind-the-wheel road test. Once your completion is reflected on your DMV record (typically 24 hours after completion), you can schedule your road test and, once your pass, receive your first New York driver's license!

This course is not preparation for the road test itself — only supervised practice behind the wheel does that. It's also not required if you already completed a high-school or classroom driver ed program and hold a valid MV-285 certificate that hasn't expired.

How it works

FOUR STEPS AND DONE.

  1. STEP 1

    Register

Create your account with your plastic NY learner's permit info (permit ID, document number, class, and expiration) and pay securely. You'll set up 10 identity-validation questions used throughout the course.

  2. STEP 2

    Complete 6 Units

270 minutes (4.5 hours) of instruction — text and video. Log in and out anytime from any device; progress saves automatically. Must be finished within 30 days of registration.

  3. STEP 3

    Pass Unit Quizzes

Each unit ends with a 4-question multiple-choice quiz. Score 70% (3 of 4) to move on. NY DMV allows three attempts per unit — fail the same quiz three times and you'll be disqualified and must re-register (new course is free).

  4. STEP 4

    State Reporting

Your completion is automatically sent to the New York DMV — there is no paper certificate. It can take 24–48 hours to post to your driving record. Once posted, you can schedule your behind-the-wheel road test. Completion is valid for one year.
