Florida Basic Driver Improvement (BDI) — FAQs.
- Is this course approved by the State of Florida?
- Yes. This 4-hour online Basic Driver Improvement course is fully approved by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) for all Florida counties.
- How long is the course?
- Per state requirements, the course requires four hours to complete. Page timers ensure that you spend the required amount of time in the course. You can log in and out as many times as you need — we keep your progress so you never lose any work.
- Is the course all reading?
- No. Unlike some Florida traffic school courses, ours includes video and interactive animations. It's written in a clear, simple style that's easy to understand for all students, including those for whom English is a second language.
- Is there a final exam?
- No. At the end of each unit you take a short multiple-choice quiz and must score 80% or higher to advance. Each attempt has new questions, you can review the material before each attempt, and you receive unlimited attempts to pass.
- Can the course be taken on a mobile device?
- Yes. The course is mobile-friendly and works on any modern tablet, smartphone, laptop, or desktop with an internet browser, on most Microsoft, Apple, and Android operating systems.
- How do I pay?
- Payment is made on the website using a debit or credit card via our secure payment page.
- Why should I elect to take a Florida BDI course after a ticket?
- Electing BDI keeps points off your driving record, requires the court to reduce your fine by 18% (per Florida law), prevents your auto insurance company from raising your rate for the offense (per §626.9541, F.S.), and preserves any existing "Safe Driver" notation on your license.
- Are there any eligibility restrictions?
- Yes. CDL holders may not elect traffic school, and neither may drivers cited for speeding more than 30 MPH over the limit. You may not elect if you have already elected within the past 12 months or five times in your lifetime. Notify the court of your intention to elect before registering so they can confirm eligibility and give you a deadline.
- Do I have to notify the court before taking the course?
- Yes. If you want to attend traffic school for a Florida ticket, you must notify the court first (online, by mail, in person, or by phone — check your ticket paperwork). If you're unsure, contact the clerk of the court for the county where you were ticketed.
- Can I get my completion certificate delivered electronically?
- Yes. The default delivery is free US Mail (5–7 business days). For $9.95 you can add a PDF certificate available for download immediately after completion — recommended if you have a court deadline coming up.
- How is my completion reported?
- We report your completion electronically to the Florida DHSMV immediately after you pass the last unit quiz. We do not report directly to individual courts — if you took the course for court reasons, follow the clerk's instructions for turning in your certificate.
- Can I elect BDI if I have a CDL?
- No. Per §318.14(9), Florida Statutes, CDL holders may not elect traffic school for a Florida ticket, regardless of the vehicle they were driving. A judge may still permit BDI attendance in court — in that case, select "Court Ordered" as the reason for attendance.
- What is a Traffic Collision Avoidance Course (TCAC)?
- TCAC is another name for the 4-hour BDI course. Most drivers in this category received a DHSMV letter after being involved in two crashes in two years, a property-damage crash, or an injury crash. Failure to attend can result in cancellation of your Florida license.
- Can I get an auto insurance discount for taking this course?
- Florida law (§627.06501, F.S.) allows insurers to offer a discount to drivers who voluntarily complete a BDI course. Not all carriers offer it — contact your provider before selecting this option. Discounts can reach up to 10% over a 3-year policy period.
