Michigan Basic Driver Improvement Course (BDIC) — FAQs.
- What is a Michigan Basic Driver Improvement Course (BDIC)?
- Eligible Michigan drivers can complete a state-approved BDIC to keep points from a ticket off their record and stop the Secretary of State from reporting the ticket to their auto insurance provider. Some courts also allow BDIC to have a ticket dismissed before it's reported.
- Is this course approved by the Michigan Secretary of State?
- Yes. Our online Michigan BDIC is approved by the Michigan Secretary of State (also known as the Michigan Department of State) for eligible drivers.
- How do I know if I'm eligible?
- The Secretary of State mails you a formal notice of eligibility. You have 60 days from that notice — your "deadline date" — to complete the course.
- How long is the course?
- The course is 4 hours in length. You can log in and out as needed — there's no requirement to be online on a specific day or time.
- How do I get started?
- Click Register to begin. You'll enter basic identity info (name, address, license number), answer 10 Yes/No identity validation questions used to verify you during the course, receive a login code, and submit payment.
- Do you charge extra to report my completion to the state?
- No. Many providers advertise a lower fee and then add $17 or more as a "state processing fee." Our site has no hidden fees — we report all successful completions to the state at no additional charge.
- What devices can I use?
- Any device with a fully functioning internet browser — PC, laptop, tablet, or smartphone. No software to download, and you can switch devices during the course.
- Is the course available 24/7?
- Yes. Progress is saved automatically to the furthest unit and page you've reached, so lost internet or power won't wipe your work.
- How do I get my certificate?
- As a state-approved provider, we report all successful completions to the Michigan Secretary of State within one business day of finishing (weekends and holidays reported the next business day). An optional downloadable certificate is available if you need one for court dismissal.
- How long do I have to complete?
- You can access the course as long as you need, but you must complete on or before the deadline date shown on the Secretary of State eligibility letter for proper credit.
- Is there a final exam?
- No. Each of the six units ends with a 5-question multiple-choice quiz. If you don't pass, you can review or retake — unlimited attempts.
- What if I don't complete before my deadline?
- The points from the violation will go on your record, which may increase insurance costs.
- How can I verify I got credit?
- Order a copy of your driving record and check that the ticket is set at 0 points. If there was any issue reporting, we'll contact you — if you don't hear from us, assume it was reported successfully. Records can take up to two weeks to update.
