New York Defensive Driving Course (IPIRP) — FAQs.
- Is this online course approved by the New York DMV?
- Yes. Our Internet Point and Insurance Reduction Program (IPIRP) course is fully approved by the New York DMV as an equivalent to the 6-hour classroom PIRP course.
- How long is the course?
- The New York DMV requires at least 320 minutes of instruction. Timers ensure each student spends the required minimum time in the course.
- How long do I have to complete it?
- New York law requires completion within 30 days of registration. If you don't finish in 30 days you can re-register at no additional charge, but you must start over from the beginning.
- Is the entire course online?
- Yes. You never have to visit a DMV office or classroom to complete the course.
- How do I pay?
- Pay via our website using a valid debit or credit card.
- Is there a final exam?
- No. At the end of each unit you take a 5-question quiz. State rule requires a minimum 75% score, with three attempts per quiz. Fail the same unit quiz three times and you'll be disqualified and must re-register and start over.
- Will I receive proof I completed the course?
- Yes. Per New York DMV rules, your certificate of completion is processed within 1 business day and mailed via USPS; expect delivery within 5–7 business days. It is included in your course fee. You may upgrade to Standard Overnight delivery during registration for an additional fee. Turn the certificate in to your insurance company for your 10% discount. Your completion is also reported electronically to the NY DMV within 5 business days for point reduction, if eligible.
- Can the course be taken on a mobile device?
- Yes. The course is mobile-friendly and runs on nearly any tablet, smartphone, laptop, or desktop with an updated browser (JavaScript and cookies enabled).
- How is the auto insurance reduction applied?
- After turning in your certificate, a minimum 10% reduction applies to the base rate for your liability and collision premiums for three years. You can renew it after each 3-year period.
- Will the course also reduce "insurance points"?
- No. Point reduction applies only to DMV-assigned driving-record points. Insurance carriers use their own separate point systems, and IPIRP has no effect on those.
- How soon will the insurance reduction be applied?
- Turn in your certificate within 90 days of completion for the discount to apply retroactive to your completion date. After 90 days, most insurers apply it starting from the date you present the certificate.
- How often can I take the course for an insurance reduction?
- Once every 36 months — you can renew indefinitely to maintain your discount.
- What is meant by "point reduction"?
- The New York DMV won't count up to four points on your record toward license suspension or revocation. It only applies to points received within the 18 months prior to completing the course and can't be used as credit toward future tickets. Point reduction cannot take your total below zero.
- How often can the course be taken for point reduction?
- Once in any 18-month period.
- Do I have to notify the DMV to get my point reduction?
- No. We notify the DMV once you've completed. The DMV notes your completion and reduces your active point total by up to four points.
- How does the course affect an already suspended license or pending suspension?
- It doesn't. If your license has already been revoked or suspended, or a violation hearing has already been scheduled, point reduction will not affect that action.
- Will the course remove violations or convictions from my record?
- No. Violations and convictions remain on your record for up to four years (10 years for drug or alcohol-related offenses).
- What if I need a duplicate certificate?
- Call 1-800-558-9887. A $10 fee applies, waived if requested within 60 days of issuance, the original was not received, and no changes are needed.
- How will I know I got credit?
- Request a copy of your driving record from the DMV using form MV-15. If your completion isn't posted more than 10 weeks after finishing, call 1-800-558-9887.
- What is your refund policy?
- Full refund within 60 days of registration if you haven't completed the course or been disqualified for failed validation or quiz questions. Call 1-800-558-9887 9AM to 6PM EST, Monday to Friday, excluding holidays.
