Virginia FAQ
Virginia Driver Improvement Course — FAQs.
- How do I earn safe driver points?
- Voluntarily complete the course to add up to 5 safe driver points to your Virginia driving record. Safe driver points offset demerit points from future violations. You can earn safe driver points this way once every two years, and are capped at 5 safe driver points on your record at any time. We report your completion electronically to the VA DMV within 1 business day so they can apply the benefit, if eligible.
- Can I take the course if I was ordered by the DMV or court?
- Yes. Our online course is approved by the Virginia DMV for drivers with a DMV order or to handle a ticket through a VA court order. We report all completions electronically to the DMV to satisfy any orders and also provide a pdf certificate which should be turned in to the court to handle a ticket.
- How do I get started?
- Click Register to begin. You'll enter basic identity information (name, address, license number), set up 10 security questions used to verify your identity throughout the course, and pay securely with any major debit or credit card.
- Is there a final exam?
- Yes. The course ends with a 50-question multiple-choice final exam. You must score 80% or higher to pass. Attempts are unlimited, but you can only take the exam once per 24-hour period.
- Do you charge extra to report my completion to the DMV?
- No. Our site has no hidden fees — we report all successful completions to the Virginia DMV electronically on the next business day at no additional charge.
- Will my insurance company actually honor this course?
- Many major auto insurance providers offer driver improvement / defensive driving course discounts (GEICO, State Farm, etc.). It is important that you contact your provider to verify participation and to get details on the discount amount and duration.
- Will the court / DMV accept an online course?
- If you were ordered by the VA DMV to complete an 8-hour driver improvement course, our course meets that requirement. If you have a ticket and have the option or were ordered to complete a VA driver improvement course to keep the ticket off your record or to avoid further penalty, our course is accepted for that.
- How fast will the state see my completion?
- We file all completions electronically to the Virginia DMV within 1 business day (Monday–Friday, excluding holidays).
- What does the course price include — any hidden fees?
- No hidden fees. The price covers the full 8-hour course, the identity-verification security questions, the 50-question final exam, the free PDF certificate, and electronic reporting of your completion to the Virginia DMV.
