What is Advanced Driver Improvement (ADI)?

Can I take the ADI course in fewer than 12 hours?

Accepted Answer

No. Per state law, ADI course itself must be a total of 12 hours, with a 24 hour break in the middle. You can complete the first six hours and then you will have to wait a day to complete the remainder. The state also requires that you submit 50 short answer responses during the 12 hours that must be manually reviewed by an instructor. Once those are marked as acceptable, there is a 10-question final exam that is also graded manually. We are grading during each business day so the turn around is typically within 1 business day. Once you pass the final exam, you get your certificate and it is reported to the DHSMV.

How will I receive my certificate of completion?

After you pass the final exam, your completion is automatically reported electronically to the Florida DHSMV and your electronic certificate (in PDF format) is generated and made available for download. If you are court ordered, it is your responsibility to follow their instructions to turn in your certificate to them.

Do you report my completion to the State of Florida?

Yes. We electronically file all ADI course completions to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV). If you are taking the course for any of the DHSMV ordered reasons such as suspended license, HTO, or 3-crashes-in-3-years reasons, the e-filing is all that is needed. If you are taking the course for a court-order you must turn your certificate in to the court via their instructions by their appointed deadline. We recommend that you follow up with the DHSMV and/or the court to make sure you have satisfied all requirements.

How long do I have to complete?

The Florida DHSMV has a rule that you must complete within 90 days from registration. If you received a hardship license or any other benefit as a result of registration in the course it will be revoked after 90 days without a successful course completion.

Can you turn off the timers in the course?

No. Timers are in place to make sure each student spends the required minimum time. Once a unit is completed, you can revisit it at any time from the course status page with no timer.

Will the court / DHSMV accept an online course?

Yes. Our course is DHSMV APPROVED, which means that it will satisfy any state or court order for a 12-hour ADI course. Your completion is filed electronically immediately after you pass the final exam. If your judge or clerk specifically required a classroom course, ask them whether the online option is acceptable in your case — in most jurisdictions it is.

How long does the course take?

The state mandates the course be 12 hours in length. They also require that there be a 24 hour break in the middle. You can complete the first six hours and then take a one day break, before completing the remaining 6 hours. IMPORTANT: As part of the course you will answer 50 short answer essays. Those must be graded manually by an actual instructor. This can take up to 1 business day. You must also take a 10 question final exam that is typed responses as well that must be manually graded. Be sure to provide time for the grading process.
