Why drivers enroll

One reason. One goal.

DETS is the state-required course every first-time Florida driver under 18 must complete before earning a learner's permit.

Get your Florida Learner's Permit

Completing the 6-hour Driver Education Traffic Safety (DETS) course and passing the 50-question Class E Knowledge Exam are the two steps required for Florida DHSMV to issue your learner's permit. With that permit you can begin at least 50 hours of supervised driving practice, including 10 hours at night, before taking the driving skills test for your full Florida driver's license.

How it works

FOUR STEPS AND DONE.

  1. STEP 1

    Register

  3. STEP 3

    Pass the Final Exam

A 40-question multiple-choice final exam. Score 80% or higher to pass — up to 3 attempts allowed.

  4. STEP 4

Congratulations to the designer of this outstanding course. I'm a very experienced driver and didn't think I needed to take it. However, after passing it, I have to admit I'm glad I took it. It provided an excellent refresher course, with some new information I hadn't e…

FAQ

Questions before you enroll.

  • Yes. As of August 1, 2025, the State of Florida changed the requirements for new drivers, which says that anyone under 18 must complete a 6-hour Driver Education Traffic Safety (DETS) course instead of the 4-hour Traffic Law Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) course to get a Florida learner's permit. If you are 18 or older, you are still required to complete the TLSAE course.
