Florida Advanced Driver Improvement (ADI) — FAQs.
- What is Advanced Driver Improvement (ADI)?
- ADI is a 12-hour course that can be required for one of the following: a suspended or revoked license, Habitual Traffic Offender (HTO) status, a court order, three crashes in three years, point accumulation, or an out of state ticket that triggered a notification from the Florida DHSMV.
- Is this course approved by the State of Florida?
- Yes. Our online ADI course is fully approved by the Florida DHSMV. It was the first ADI course approved in Florida and has been offered for over three decades.
- Can I take the ADI course in fewer than 12 hours?
- No. Per state law, ADI course itself must be a total of 12 hours, with a 24 hour break in the middle. You can complete the first six hours and then you will have to wait a day to complete the remainder. The state also requires that you submit 50 short answer responses during the 12 hours that must be manually reviewed by an instructor. Once those are marked as acceptable, there is a 10-question final exam that is also graded manually. We are grading during each business day so the turn around is typically within 1 business day. Once you pass the final exam, you get your certificate and it is reported to the DHSMV.
- How will I receive my certificate of completion?
- After you pass the final exam, your completion is automatically reported electronically to the Florida DHSMV and your electronic certificate (in PDF format) is generated and made available for download. If you are court ordered, it is your responsibility to follow their instructions to turn in your certificate to them.
- How do I receive my proof-of-enrollment letter?
- Your proof-of-enrollment letter is FREE and available for download immediately after you complete registration and payment. It's also available every time you log in. Needed for a hardship license application.
- Do you report my completion to the State of Florida?
- Yes. We electronically file all ADI course completions to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV). If you are taking the course for any of the DHSMV ordered reasons such as suspended license, HTO, or 3-crashes-in-3-years reasons, the e-filing is all that is needed. If you are taking the course for a court-order you must turn your certificate in to the court via their instructions by their appointed deadline. We recommend that you follow up with the DHSMV and/or the court to make sure you have satisfied all requirements.
- How long do I have to complete?
- The Florida DHSMV has a rule that you must complete within 90 days from registration. If you received a hardship license or any other benefit as a result of registration in the course it will be revoked after 90 days without a successful course completion.
- Can you turn off the timers in the course?
- No. Timers are in place to make sure each student spends the required minimum time. Once a unit is completed, you can revisit it at any time from the course status page with no timer.
