Florida Driver Education Traffic Safety (DETS) Course — FAQs.
- Is this course the required course for those under 18 trying to get my Florida learner's permit?
- Yes. As of August 1, 2025, the State of Florida changed the requirements for new drivers, which says that anyone under 18 must complete a 6-hour Driver Education Traffic Safety (DETS) course instead of the 4-hour Traffic Law Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) course to get a Florida learner's permit. If you are 18 or older, you are still required to complete the TLSAE course.
- Is this course approved by the State of Florida?
- Yes. This 6-hour online Driver Education and Traffic Safety course is fully approved by the State of Florida (Florida DHSMV). This course is required for Florida residents under the age of 18 who are seeking their learner's permit and ultimately driver's license. Being a state-approved provider assures that when you complete our course, the Florida DHSMV will receive the completion information properly so it can be found in their system at your permit appointment.
- How long is the course?
- Per state law, the course requires a minimum of six hours to complete. The course is a combination of text and videos. The actual course time can vary depending on your reading speed.
- Can this course be taken on a mobile device?
- Yes. This course is fully optimized for mobile use and can be completed on most smartphones, tablets, and other internet-enabled devices, in addition to desktop and laptop computers. It works across the majority of Microsoft, Apple, and Android operating systems. For the best experience on mobile devices, we suggest using the device's default web browser. Please make sure JavaScript is enabled and that your browser allows cookies to ensure the course functions properly.
- Is the course all reading?
- No. Many Florida DETS courses are all reading. Our course has videos, animations, and many colorful graphics.
- Does the course have to be completed in one sitting?
- No. You can access the course whenever it's convenient for you — there's no need to complete it in one sitting. Your progress is automatically saved each time you log out, so you can return and continue where you left off. The course is available online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and can be completed from any computer with internet access.
- I lost my login code. How can I get it back?
- First, check your email for the course registration message that was sent when you created your account — your login code will be shown there. You can also go to the course login page and click the "I forgot my login" link to have it resent to you. If you continue to have trouble, our support team can retrieve your login code. Call us at 1-800-558-9887 or contact us for assistance.
- Can I take my learner's permit exam online with you too?
- Yes. If you are at least 14.5 and under 18 years of age, you can take your Class E Knowledge Exam (a.k.a. learner's permit test) online through us. Anyone over 18 must take the Class E exam in person at an authorized location. The Florida Learner's Permit test is a 50-question test covering the road signs and road rules contained in the Florida Driver's Handbook. You can do this before or after you take your DETS course, but both the learner's permit test and DETS course are required to get a Florida learner's license.
- How old do I have to be to take the course?
- You must be at least 14.5 years old and no older than 17 to take the DETS course.
- Can I change my registration information?
- We can make corrections to the registration information while you are in the course. Once you have successfully completed the course and been reported to the Florida DHSMV, any changes will require a $10 correction and re-reporting fee. If you need to change your information, please call us at 1-800-558-9887 for assistance.
- Does the course have a final exam?
- Yes. The State of Florida requires that all approved DETS courses have a final exam. The exam consists of 40 questions and you must get at least an 80% to pass. You are allowed three tries to get a passing score.
- Is my completion reported to the Florida DHSMV?
- Yes. After you pass the final exam, you will be given an opportunity to verify your information and then our system will submit your course completion to the Florida DHSMV. Their system will receive the completion and send back a state certificate number that will be shown on your completion certificate to validate the reporting was successful. If the attempt to report the completion is unsuccessful, you will receive a notification on the site with instructions to call us for assistance. Once you have successfully completed the course, you will be able to immediately download your completion certificate in PDF format for your records.
