Florida Drug & Alcohol Course (TLSAE) — FAQs.
- Is this course still required if I am under 18 and getting my Florida learner's permit?
- No. In 2025 Florida law changed to require anyone under 18 to complete a 6-hour Driver Education Traffic Safety (DETS) course instead of the 4-hour TLSAE course to get a Florida learner's permit. The TLSAE course is still required for first-time drivers 18 or older.
- Is this course approved by the State of Florida?
- Yes. This 4-hour online drug and alcohol course is fully approved by the Florida DHSMV as a Traffic Law Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) course, which is required for Florida residents 18 or older seeking their learner's permit or first driver's license.
- Is this the same as the "TLSAE", "DATE", or "DATA" course?
- Yes. Most people call it the 4-hour Florida drug and alcohol course, but the official name is Traffic Law Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE). It's also referred to as DATE or DATA. It covers the dangers of alcohol and drug use and their effects on driving.
- How long is the course?
- Per state law, the course requires a minimum of four hours. Actual time varies with your reading speed.
- Can this course be taken on a mobile device?
- Yes. It's mobile-friendly on nearly any tablet, smartphone, laptop, or desktop with a browser that supports JavaScript and cookies.
- Is the course all reading?
- No. Our TLSAE course has videos, animations, and colorful graphics — students prefer this to text-only courses.
- Does the course have to be completed in one sitting?
- No. Log in and out anytime — progress is saved.
- Can I take my Florida learner's permit test online?
- Yes, if you're between 14.5 and 17. Anyone 18+ must take the Class E Knowledge Exam in person. Both the permit test and this course are required for a Florida learner's license.
- Why do I have to answer security questions?
- Identity validation questions are required by the State of Florida to confirm the course is being taken by you. Miss three ID questions during the course and you will be disqualified and must start the course over. Example: "Do you own a pet?"
- Does the course have a final exam?
- No. Short quizzes at the end of each unit with unlimited attempts. No final exam.
- If I have been licensed in another U.S. state, do I need this course?
- No. Only required for people who have never held a U.S. driver license in any state. Some adults previously licensed abroad may need it — check with your local driver license office.
- How is my completion reported?
- We report electronically to the Florida DHSMV and provide a PDF certificate for your records.
