Illinois Adult Driver Education — FAQs.
- How long is the Illinois Adult Driver Education course?
- All Illinois Secretary of State approved Adult Driver Education courses are six (6) hours. Online, you can register and access the course 24/7 and log in and out as needed.
- Who is eligible to take it online?
- You're eligible if all three are true: you are 18, 19, or 20 years old; you're applying for an Illinois driver's license for the first time; and you have never taken driver ed in high school or through a commercial driving school.
- How much does the course cost?
- Our Illinois Adult Driver Education course is $49. No hidden or extra fees — we do not charge you for your certificate or for electronically filing your completion with the Illinois Secretary of State.
- Do you charge extra for reporting the completion to the SOS?
- No. Unlike most of our competitors, we don't charge for that — it's included in the course price.
- Is behind-the-wheel training required?
- No, but it's encouraged. All license applicants must pass the behind-the-wheel component at a Secretary of State testing facility. The state recommends up to 50 hours of supervised behind the wheel practice (at least 10 at night).
- I already took driver education in high school or at a commercial driving school — is this still required?
- No. With proof of prior completion — a certified high-school transcript showing a passing grade or a completion receipt from a commercial school — you can apply for your Illinois license without this course.
- Is there a final exam?
- Yes. Our 20-question multiple-choice final requires 70% or higher to pass, with two attempts allowed. This is separate from the written test at the driver license office.
- Is my completion reported to the Secretary of State?
- Yes. Your completion is reported electronically to the Illinois Secretary of State within 1 business day. The Secretary of State's office then emails you a completion letter to print and bring to the driver license office.
- Can I take the course on a mobile device?
- Yes. The course is fully mobile-friendly and works on nearly any smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop with a modern internet browser (JavaScript and cookies enabled). Your progress syncs automatically, so you can log in and out and switch devices anytime without losing your place.
- I'm moving to Illinois with an out-of-state license — do I need this course?
- No. The Illinois Secretary of State will require you to surrender your out-of-state license and take the applicable test(s). No Adult Driver Education Course is required.
